7 Ways Park Furniture Can Deter Crime & Build Stronger Communities

    Safety Innovation Design

Imagine if the strategic placement of park furniture could do more than just enhance the design - what if it could actively deter crime and even prevent it before it happens?

Creating safe park spaces that attract more visitors, and reducing crime-related repair costs, are vital elements of any outdoor public space. By applying Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), we can create parks that are both safer and more sustainable. Let’s look at how this strategy works.

What is Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), and how does it work to prevent crime?

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a proactive approach to crime prevention that focuses on designing physical spaces in ways that reduce opportunities for criminal activity. The core idea is simple: criminals are motivated by high-reward, low-risk opportunities. By increasing the effort required, the likelihood of being caught, and the control over access, the opportunity for crime can be reduced significantly. State governments across Australia, as well as local police and councils, have adopted CPTED principles to help reduce crime and increase community safety.

How Park Furniture Plays a Role in CPTED

One of the simplest and most effective ways to implement CPTED principles in parks is through the strategic placement of park furniture. Here's how park furniture can be placed to make a real difference:

    1. Natural Surveillance

Criminal activity is reduced when there is a high likelihood that someone will witness suspicious behaviour. Achieve this by positioning benches and seating in open, visible locations, ensuring they can be easily seen from various angles.

    1. Territorial Reinforcement

Park furniture can be placed as boundaries separating park areas by their use, such as active zones separated from quiet, more relaxed spaces. Zoning creates a sense of ownership to park users, increasing their sense of pride and care for these spaces which reduces the likelihood of unwanted behaviour.

    1. Access Control

Furniture such as modular furniture ranges can be easily reconfigured based on potential safety concerns such as closing off secluded pockets or encouraging foot traffic into open visible spaces - this reduces opportunities for criminal activities to occur in isolated spots.

    1. Maintenance

Choosing products such as aluminium seating that can be easily maintained, repaired, and constructed for longevity indicates a well-kept and clean space. This signals that the area is actively monitored and discourages criminals who target neglected and poorly maintained areas.

    1. Target Hardening

Choose products such as Bin Enclosures constructed with durable materials such as stainless steel and heavy-duty latches. This makes vandalisation and theft difficult, increasing the park’s resilience against crime.

    1. Lighting

Studies show park users, especially women, actively seek well-lit areas as it enhances visibility and forges a sense of security during darkness. Incorporate lighting into park furniture such as seating and shelters not only provides a sense of security but also helps to deter unwanted behaviour. In some cases, removing lighting in estates make surrounding houses feel safer by deterring loitering.

    1. Social Interaction

Arrange BBQs and tables in clusters to encourage social interactions and groupings as busy, active spaces naturally deter criminal behaviour.

Creating Safer, More Inviting Parks Together

By applying CPTED principles to layout, material selection and furniture placement, public spaces can discourage crime while encouraging community use and oversight.
