Many companies are joining the cause of cleaning up the planet by using plastic composite materials. But is this the way to a clean environment, or is there another option many businesses haven’t explored that can solve it all?
A composite material combines two or more materials with different physical and chemical properties. Combined, they create a specialised material that can be stronger and lighter than traditional materials. The most produced composite material is polymer and recycled plastic, as it provides an ethical alternative to high-maintenance products. It is also cheap, high performing, and has a longer life cycle. Therefore using composite materials has become a desirable option for businesses to acknowledge that recycling is critical. However, using composite materials doesn’t always equate to an unpolluted environment.
Composite materials indeed have their place in our society, primarily when responsibly sourced, but composite doesn’t have to be the first choice when constructing a park.
Recycling plastic for composite purposes can be highly complex as the recycled materials are likely to pollute each other and are expensive to produce correctly. If the correct processes are not in place, the composite material’s value and strength will eventually degrade, leading to structures failing. Although this is a step in the right direction, plastic cannot be recycled forever. For example, when a park bench made from composite materials begins to degrade, it cannot be reused or recycled to be utilised similarly and will most likely go to a landfill.
But that creates the question, what is the best sustainable material to build
